A relatively recent addition to the range of the world’s most famous bitters, Angostura only added these Orange Bitters in 2007. At the time of release, this was their first new Bitters expression for 183 years.
Remarkably, Angostura’s Orange Bitters are made with an entirely new formula: not one botanical from the original Angsotura Bitters features in this bottling.
The Bitters uses a mixture of citrus essences, oils from both bitter and sweet orange, spices and herbs. The result are zesty, juicy bitters with just the right about of spiciness. Bottled at 28% ABV, the Orange Bitters are quite a bit weaker than the standard Angostura offering.
Angostura state that these Orange Bitters are “the soul of an exception dry martini” and they certainly are perfect for adding a bright, citrusy bite to any cocktail.
Orange Bitters work particularly well with clear spirits, but can be used to add flavour to whisky cocktails: they are excellent when paired with the original Angostura bitters in an Old Fashioned.
