A rare and luxurious rum from Martinique based distillery, Saint James.
An example of the elusive long aged Agricole style, this rum has been created to celebrate the distillery’s 250th anniversary since its foundation in 1765.
The spirit itself comprises of a blend of six vintages considered to be of an exceptional quality, from the years: 2000, 1998, 1976, 1952, 1934, and most incredibly, from 1885. This bottling then represents one of the last chances to taste rum distilled in the 19th century. The 1885 vintage has been acclaimed by some drinkers and writers as the very first vintage rum to be bottled, anywhere in the world. The spirits were likely aged in French oak, but with some extremely old rums in the bottling, it is difficult to be absolutely sure.
The result is a luscious, satisfying rum which serves up notes of sweet demerara, estery flower petals, rich oak, pineapples, mango, soft dried fruits, toasted oily nuts, cigar smoke, gingerbread, toffee, vanilla, leather, sweet apricots, some chopped herbs, rich custard and a touch of citrus rind and sea spray.
A quite magnificent bottling, presented at 43% ABV for a touch more warmth and body.
The rum is limited to 800 bottles (unsurprising, given the vintages included), each of which are marvellously presented with a decanter design and handsome presentation box.
