Another terrific addition to Diageo’s long running Distillers Edition series, this time from Oban.

This Oban has been finished in Fino sherry casks for two years following an initial aging period in refill American oak barrels. Fino is a bone dry, often almost savoury style of sherry, often overlooked by whisky makers in favour of the more popular Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez casks. Montilla is aged close to the Spanish coast, giving the wine a maritime profile. When Fino casks are used, it can impart the whisky with a delightful precise, citric and coastal quality – on full show here.

This dram offers notes of dry white grapes, orange zest, salted caramel, bitter coffee, malty sweetness, vanilla, kiwi fruit, some slightly smoked spice, soft yeasty bread, lemon juice, honey and sharp blackberries.

Bottled at 43% ABV for a little more body and warmth, this is an impressive cask finished whisky.
