The first release of a new limited edition 16 year old series from Highland distillery Fettercairn.
First released in 2020, this dram make the intriguing use of chocolate malted barley (meaning heavily dried, almost burnt, grains), which tends to produce a rich, stout-like whisky. The spirit has been matured in first fill former Bourbon barrels, alongside a few sherry and port casks, providing depth of flavour. At 16 years, this is a rather sophisticated and delectable dram.
Drinkers can expect thick dark chocolate, rich vanilla, earthy spice, dark fruits (plums, cherries and strawberries), bright oak, raisins, some espresso, prunes, ginger and freshly baked fruit cake.
Bottled at 46.4% ABV, and without chill filtration, this is a medium bodied, flavoursome whisky.
