A really outstanding and trailblazing release from Indian distillery Amrut. This is a “Single Malt Rye” whisky. That is to say, a whisky produced entirely with malted rye grain, giving a very different profile to usual rye whiskey, mostly produced with unmalted rye.
The spirit has been produced from European rye, and matured in virgin American oak casks in India, making it something of a global endeavour.
The end result is a truly delectable whisky with a singular profile. Drinkers should expect waves of classic American oak tropical fruits (mangos, pineapple and banana), giving way to to rye flavours of cinnamon, rosemary and grassy cereal notes. This whisky has a deftness that is not often present with hot-climate distilleries.
Bottled at 50% ABV, and without either chill filtration or artificial colouration, this allows the natural flavours of this dram to be fully experienced.
A boldly flavoured whisky with a boldly designed package, this is a must try for all lovers of rye and world-whisky alike. Amrut Single Malt Rye has proven hard to find, and we don’t expect this whisky to stick around for long!
