Amrut Intermediate Sherry
70 cl, 57.1%

A fantastic single malt whisky from India, made from barley grown at the base of the Himalayas. Amrut have been selling whisky since 2004, though the distillery itself has been making other products since 1948. Amrut translates from the Sanskrit as “Elixir of life”, and in Hindu belief, Amrut is the drink of the divines. Intermediate also has an interesting origin, referring to the distinctive maturation style of this whisky. After first being matured in former Bourbon casks, the spirit is transferred into Sherry casks, before being placed again in Bourbon barrels. We like to think of this maturation technique as a “sherry sandwich”! Bottled at a hefty 57.1% ABV, this whisky certainly packs a punch. On the nose, the whisky opens with the distinctive aromas of wood spice that we have come to know from Indian whiskies: dense caramel, cinnamon, candied ginger and nutmeg with a thick vanilla. These are soon joined by classic sherried dried fruit notes of prunes, apricots and sultanas. The palate is thick with fruits and spices with a hot, oily mouthfeel. A little tropical fruit flavour emerges here, with mango and pineapple accompanied by warm red wine. The finish is long and lingering with a huge sherried spice quality. An absolute beauty of an Indian whisky, one all world whisky fans should try.
