At Fine Drams, our love of delicious Rhum Agricole is no secret, and we particularly like those made at the volcanic distillery of Rhum J.M. in Martinique. Rum Agricole differs from many of its Caribbean cousins, in that it is not made of molasses or another sugar refinery by-product, but of the fermented juice of the sugar cane itself. This produces a grassier, more fragrant spirit. This particular bottling has been finished in Armagnac casks, the second in the series that uses these barrels, which are Chateau Tariquet casks to be exact (many of the wonderful wares from this distillery are available for purchase right here at Fine Drams!). Armagnac is a type of brandy, and here it has the effect of lending notes of sweet grape and dried fruit to the naturally delicious vanilla rich, sweet and tropical notes of the rum. 10 years is quite a long time in the tropical climate of Martinique, and means this rum has quite an astonishing maturity. The rum is presented at 40.8% ABV. This is a single cask release, and only 533 bottles were produced, making it something of a rarity. Drinkers should move fast if they want to try this eye-catching rum, which is bottled in a frosted glass bottle with a smart presentation box.
