Plantation Barbados 2005
70 cl, 42.8%

Another cracking single vintage rum from the masterful Plantation company.

This rum was distilled from molasses in both column and pot stills at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Bridgetown, Barbados. This distillery dates back to 1893, and strangely enough was founded by a pair of German brothers, and is best known these days for producing Cockspur rum. In 2017 the distillery was purchased by Maison Ferrand (who own Plantation Rum).

A 2005 vintage, this bottling is made entirely from rum distilled in that year. The spirit spent the first 11 year of maturation in the Caribbean, where it rested in former Bourbon casks, before being shipped to France for an additional two years of ageing in casks that previously held Ferrand Cognac.

The result is a rich and complex rum, with notes of toasted oak, brown sugar, Cognac, sweet dried fruit, orange rind, vanilla, pastry, slight menthol, sugared almonds and pecans, cedar wood and tobacco.

If you study the label, you will notice the windmill of the Morgan Lewis mill, which ceased operations in 1947, becoming the final of Barbados’s sugar mills to close.
