Another excellent bottling from Gordon & MacPhail.

This time it’s a single malt whisky from cult Wick-based distillery, the second most-northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland, after the newly built Wolfburn.

Nicknamed “the Maritime Malt”, Old Pulteney is known for its mineralic style and coastal style. The distillery is also known for its uniquely shaped styles, which feature large bulbous bumps on the neck, whilst the wash still has a flat top, said to be because it wouldn’t fit in the distillery otherwise.

This 15 year old is a classic example of the Pulteney style, maintaining an excellent balance between the spirit and the oak. The spirit was aged in a mixture of first fill sherry and first fill former Bourbon casks.

The dram serves up notes of sea spray, oily nuts, toffee, bright berries and raisins, lemon rind, chocolate and banana.

A thoroughly excellent bottling from Gordon and MacPhail, from one of Scotland’s finest distilleries. Fans of the standard range will find this a welcome excursion into the realm of the independently bottled.
