A celebration of 15 years of Octomore, Bruichladdich’s hyper peated single malt, that began as an experiment and now can be considered nothing less than a modern whisky classic with a cult following.
This is named “Masterclass”, and it is exactly that, a lesson in producing single malt whisky of the highest quality. As always with Bruichladdich, terroir is vital, and this spirit begins with strictly Scottish only barley, grown in the 2007 harvest.
The barley was peated to a ferocious 167ppm, and the spirit was distilled in 2008. Maturation occurs in 100% first fill American oak former Bourbon barrels, from distilleries including: Four Roses, Jack Daniels, Heaven Hill, Clermont Springs, and Buffalo Trace.
This has produced a marvellous and delicious whisky, with the sweet, vanilla-rich, and wood spice-laden qualities of the Bourbon barrels softening the fearsome peat and maritime flavours of the peated spirit. Classic Bruichladdich creaminess and floral notes are present too.
A little more age than standard Octomores has provided a softer mouthfeel. This whisky is bottled at a very robust 59.3% ABV, and without either chill-filtration or artificial colouration, ensuring that its raw power is totally on show.
Another beautiful whisky in this series, from one of Scotland’s best distilleries. Octomore 8.1 is limited to 42,000 bottles worldwide, and should not be missed!
