An excellent bottling from Nikka’s Miyagikyo distillery, originally bottled for La Maison du Whisky in Paris.

Ever since Jim Murray named Yamazaki’s 2013 Sherry Cask bottling Whisky of the Year in 2015, sherried Japanese whiskies have been increasingly sought after and highly regarded.

This is not just marketing spin though, something special seems to happen when the balanced, harmonious character of Japanese whiskies encounters the delicious flavours of the sherry cask.

This dram is no exception, and has been finished for one year in sherry casks, following a maturation in former Bourbon barrels.

The bottling opens up with notes of peach, plum, cherries, raspberry and figs, followed by some spicier flavours of cinnamon, ground ginger, and nutmeg. A little citrus rind, toasted nuts, leather, caramel, dried fruits, dark chocolate and coffee come next.

A superb sherried whisky, bottled at 46% ABV.

We don’t expect this one to hang around for long.
