The Macallan Ruby is, as the name would suggest, a beautiful ruby red colour. The “Ruby” name would, of course, not make any sense if there was any artificial colouring added to these bottlings, so this is presented at natural colour. This expression is dark, rich and beguiling. On the palate it opens up with ginger, nutmeg, orange, sultana, and raisin, fading in to a long, lingering finish.
Nose: Huge, huge dried fruits- particularly raisins and figs. Slight succulency, some plums behind. A little old oak and warm barley. Healthy servings of cinnamon, caramel and star anise.
Palate: Cherries, with some figs. Brandy grapes. More dried fruits, with thick tinned fruit syrup. Oak, barley, honey. Wood spice and caramel. Sudden rush of milk chocolate and slight creaminess.
Finish: Long, very long, with all spice, cinnamon and slight liquorice.
Overall: Really incredible stuff. One of the very top sherried whiskies around, offering spectacular spice, fruit and sweetness. A delightful whisky that will reward even long-standing Macallan fans.
