Here at Fine Drams we are huge fans of rums from Martinique and the Agricole style. This distinctive variety of rum is created by fermenting the juice of the pressed sugar-cane, as opposed to using molasses or other sugar byproducts. This is known to create a less dense, grassier and more aromatic style of rum. Traditionally, this is a style that has been dominated by two distilleries: Rhum JM and Rhum Clement. Yet, La Mauny is one of the island’s oldest distilleries, and can trace its noble history back to 1749. It is indeed the largest distillery in the French Caribbean, and produces a fantastic quality of Agricole. Agricole follows the same appellation rules that apply to French wine and Cognac, so this XO must be at least 6 years old. This is a rich, luxurious rum designed to be drunk neat and patiently. The nose is wonderfully aromatic, with sweet spiced notes of raisins and nutmeg, built around a core of slightly floral, grassy Agricole notes. The palate is thick and rich, with waves of dried fruit, cherries and tropical juice flavours. The finish brings us back to the Agricole heart of this spirit, with a delicious fragrant floral quality that lasts for several minutes. Tremendous rum!
