One of our very favourite Cognac producers, Chateau de Montifaud have been producing an excellent quality of Cognac since 1866, over 150 years ago. The company is still family-owned by the Vallet family, who are now in their 6th generation of managing the distillery. Over the years they have developed a superb reputation for producing some of the best Cognac in the region.

Bottlings such as this “Millennium” VSOP demonstrate that their standing in the industry is well earned. In many ways, this is the complete Cognac, a marriage of craft production, family ownership and expert packaging.

All of the grapes used to produce this spirit were grown in the Montifaud vineyard, which has been owned by the family since 1837. Located in one of the finest crus in the Cognac region, Petite Champagne, the vineyard is the prime location of the cultivation of grapes. It has flat earth that receives plenty of sunlight, and chalky soil which produces fruit with the ideal level of acidity for Cognac.

This is a VSOP bottling, meaning it has to have been aged for a minimum of 4 years in French oak casks. These casks are located in the Montifaud cellars, being cool and dry, are the ideal location for the the long maturation of spirit. Montifaud are known for over-aging their spirit beyond the legal minimum, and given the luxury nature of this VSOP, we can suppose it is a little older than 4 years.

Drinkers should expect superb balance of cask and spirt, with delectable fruity flavours of peach, white grape, red berries and tropical fruits. These are accompanied by gorgeous vanilla, polished oak, coconut and nut notes produced by the French oak.

This cognac is presented in a rustic, old fashioned style bottling with a traditional stopper and a string-wrapped neck, giving it a real “old-world” feeling. It comes with a handsome presentation tube, featuring an image of the Chateau itself.

A must try for all Cognac-fans, and an excellent addition to even the widest collections.
