The Speyside distillery of BenRiach have an excellent track record producing whiskies with interesting cask maturations. This 21 year old offering is no exception.
The whisky has been matured in a mixture of four different cask varieties: virgin oak, Pedro Ximenéz sherry, red wine and former Bourbon American oak barrels. Each of these cask imparts a different character, making for a complex and sophisticated final product.
This bottling offers up flavours of tropical fruit, chocolaty red wine, dried fruits, cream, lemon zest, big bright oak, sherry, rye spices, caramel, butter shortbread and vanilla custard.
Bottled at 46% ABV, and without chill filtration or colouration, this whisky has a full mouthfeel and rich intensity.
Another excellent BenRiach bottling, this whisky showcases each of its casks well, without any one variety dominating.
