A marvelous, 21 year old offering from BenRiach, one of our very favourite distilleries here at Fine Drams. This forms part of their much-loved Cask Finish range, in which whiskies are aged in refill American oak former Bourbon barrels, before being finished for a period in a wine cask – giving additional complexity, flavour and colour. This particularly bottling sees whisky finished in former Tawny Port hogsheads, giving the whisky superb sweet, fruity notes. There are few things that the tasting team at Fine Drams prefer than a good port finish, and this is an excellent example. On the nose are waves of stewed red fruit aromas, soon followed by an apple pie note, some blackcurrant, peppery spice and a little vanilla. The palate is rich in vanilla toasted oak flavours, followed by raspberries, cherries and strawberries, a little blackcurrant cordial, and a warm golden hot malt note. The finish brings a little barrel char, and lasting sweet wood spice. Fantastic whisky, that’s all the better for being bottled at 46% ABV and without chill filtration or colouration.
