A fantastic offering from BenRiach, that sees their spirit matured in refill Bourbon American oak casks, before a finishing period in Pedro Ximénez sherry butts from Jerez in southern Spain. This extra maturation gives the whisky its incredible dark rose colour, alongside a fantastic sweet quality. Pedro Ximénez is the sweetest of the Jerez sherries, and has a dense, almost syrupy mouthfeel, and incredible nutty and chocolaty notes. This is heavily sherried on the nose, with waves of chocolate, nuts, espresso, dark prunes, cherries and apricots, sultanas, and a creamy vanilla-led woodspice. The palate is thick and luxuriant, with fresh coffee, sweet figs, dates, peppered oak, dense dark chocolate, cigar smoke and a thick hit of vanilla custard. The finish is warming with cedar wood, baking spices and overripe banana. This whisky really benefits from being bottled at 46% ABV and without chill filtration or colouration. Another top notch offering from BenRiach!
