From the release notes: “This cask, a fresh ruby port bodega butt was bottled in September 2012, when it was 21 years old. The Whisky was first filled into refill hogsheads on the 9th. November 1990, during the early months of production after Ben Nevis Distillery gad been acquired by the Japanese whisky distiller – The Nikka Whisky Distilling Company Limited. Although Nikke became the owners of Ben Nevis Distillery in the spring of 1989, they spent some time thinking about what they wanted from the acquisition and then considered what new items of plant would be required. A new Cochran boiler was installed along with a new mash tun and ancillary equipment in the Mash House from Newmill Engineering of Elgin as well as creating a new fermentation area (Tunroom) from Forsyths of Rothes. All this work took until September 1990 and production re-started immediately. The fisrt filling of this new make malt spirit took place on the 28th September 1990 with the first cask being ceremoniously filled by our president, Mr. Takeshi Taketsuru, having come over from Japan especially for this occasion.
This whisky, filled into cask numbers 905 – 919 of 1990, was allowed to age in Duty-Free Warehouse No.5 on site until being vatted an filled into a number of fresh ruby port bodega butts on 12th February 2003. These casks were then placed in our Duty-Free Warehouse No.2 where they continued to mature until September 2012 when the whisky was then 21 years old. This cask, No, 4, from the 10th vatting operation of 2003 was singled out for bottling as it was by this time considered to be of suitable quality to be bottled as a special release.
Although bottled back in 2012 it was felt that this whisky deserved a better presentation than just the standard bottle, but it was only after producing our malt bottle here in the U.K. that it was considered that this could better reflect the quality of this whisky (bottle numbers 201—825), with the first 200 bottled going in to this decanter gift presentation set.”
