Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2008
75 cl, 12%

A phenomenal Champagne wine from one of the consistently top-tier houses, Veuve Clicquot.

La Grande Dame is named after the Widow Clicquot – a pioneer of the champagne industry. Barbe-Nicole Clicquot was widowed at age 27, but continued her late husband’s (François Clicquot) efforts in producing a world class wine. It her was her innovations in “riddling” to settle and remove the dead yeast from the bottle that produced clear, rather than cloudy Champagne, and changed the course of the wine’s history forever.

This 2008 vintage is described by Veuve Clicquot as their “prestige cuvee”, and is made with 92% Pinot Noir, and 8% Chardonnay. The wine contains a blend of grapes from the six grand cru favoured by the Widow Clicquot herself. A brut Champagne, this bottling has been dosed with 6 grams per litre of sugar.

The result is a superb, well-structured Champagne, which pours a light straw colour with a fine, crisp mousse. Drinkers can expect notes of lemon rind, yeasty fresh bread, floral honey, almond, marzipan biscuits and brightening acidity. There’s a faint hint of spicy smoke on the finish.

Pairs excellently well with seafood, but shines particularly when served before a meal. This bottling received 95+ points from Wine & Spirits, Wine Spectator and Decanter.

Will keep for beyond 20 years, but can be enjoyed now.
