Plantation Nicaragua 2004
70 cl, 42%

Plantation is the rum company owned and managed by Maison Ferrand, one of Cognac’s most esteemed producing houses. As such, they approach their rum by combining their French expertise with the spirit of the Caribbean, producing some incredible quality releases. Founded at the end of the 1990s, this company has established an enviable reputation for high quality spirit in a very short space of time, and is now regarded as one of the best rum brands on the market by bartenders and drinkers alike.

Being from Nicaragua, this is almost certainly a rum from the Flor de Caña distillery, known for its delicious estery and dry style. This 2004 vintage was aged initially for ten years in former Bourbon barrels over in its home nation, before being shipped across the Atlantic to Nicaragua for an 18 month finishing period in wine casks in the Maison Ferrand cellars in Cognac. This gives this rum an extraordinary complexity and elegance. On the nose this rum offers up aromas of burnt sugar, fresh cane, lime juice and toffee. The palate is rich with thick sugar notes, over ripe bananas, mangos, pineapple and fresh red grapes. The finish is long and lingering with a wonderful caramel quality that lasts and lasts. This rum is presented at the slightly higher strength of 42% ABV, giving the flavours a little extra kick! A cracking rum, that can be enjoyed neat or as a premium alternative in cocktails.
