Minor Case, Major Flavour! This is a delightful rye whiskey produced by the Limestone Branch distillery.
The dram is named after Minor Case Beam, a member of the famous Beam distilling family who created Jim Beam and have had a hand in the management of Heaven Hill distillery. The current manager of Limestone Branch (located in Lebanon, Kentucky) is a one Steve Beam, Minor Case’s grandson.
Minor Case Beam was a master of rye distilling in the years prior to prohibition, previously producing a famous bottling named “Old Trump”– a bottling that would be rather polarising these days! As such, Minor Case was a fitting choice to serve as the namesake of this fiery rye whiskey.
The whiskey itself uses a mashbill of 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malt, producing a sweet, aggressively spicy and slightly chewy spirit. The rye was distilled in Indiana for 24 months in charred new American oak barrels, before being aged for an additional six months in casks that previously held Meiers Winery’s award winning #44 Cream Sherry.
The sherry lends a wonderful fruity flavour to the spirit, lending a sweetness that offsets the rye’s powerful spice. Drinkers can expect notes of dried fruits, charred oak, ginger, oak, malt, cloves, intense cinnamon, cedarwood, fresh berries, slight fudgy pastry, a little mint and milk chocolate.
The dram is bottled at 45% ABV for a little extra intensity and body.
Another excellent bottling, from the same folk behind the Yellowstone Bourbons.
