Midleton’s awesome annual release is a highlight of the whiskey calendar every year. This 2016 edition is a tremendous blended Irish whiskey, drawn entirely from American oak barrels, the finest in the Jameson-producing distillery’s large reserves. Indeed, Brian Nation, Midleton’s new Master Distiller has hand selected these fantastic casks personally. On the nose, this is an intensely malty whiskey, with growing aromas of jammy fruits, citrus rind and tropical fruit – particularly mango and pineapple. On the palate, malt rises again, with intense flavours of woodspice, vanilla, oak and overripe bananas. The finish returns to flavours of tropical fruit, with apricot, mango, bananas, pineapple and toasted woodspice. Presented in a very traditional bottle, complete with charming wooden presentation box, this would be a great gift for any Irish whiskey fan.
