An excellent white rum release from the highly respected Habitation Velier. Rums from this company are something of a spirits-nerd’s dream, with a wealth of details provided on the packaging. The “White Jamaica Pure Single Rum” is a 100% pot still distillation, made with molasses produced at Worth Park Estate, in Jamaica. Yet the area of real interest for rum and spirits fan will be the fermentation process of the WP 502. The molasses are allowed to ferment for an incredible three months. This process makes for a spirit with an outstandingly high amount of congeners, which gives spirits their flavour. Indeed, Forsyths describe this bottling as “A unique high congeners release”. In this case it produces that very distinctive Jamaican “Funk” that enthrals so many drinkers. The rum is rich in funky molasses, toasted coconut, clove and coriander flavours, whilst boasting a luxuriously thick mouthfeel. Forsyths WP 502 is bottled at a high proof of 57% ABV and has no added sugar, meaning the natural sweetness of the spirit can take hold. Whilst this is a white rum and is high in proof, we still recommend trying it neat as you would a fine whisky, due to its unique characteristics. That said, this rum also lends some interesting and rare notes to even the most complex of cocktails. This bottling is actually one of the more modern designs from Habitation Velier, yet it still retains an old-school feel with a diagram of the stills and flask-style bottle. A rum that manages to be both fascinating and delicious, this will stretch the palate of even the most experienced spirits drinker.
