A fascinating bottling of Floki from the Eimverk distillery in Iceland, first released in 2019.
Floki is distilled from 100% Icelandic barley, and is Iceland’s first (and so far, only) single malt whisky. For this bottling Eimverk have partnered with the Icelandic Bryggjan brewery, finishing their spirit in barrels that had previously held Bryggian Imperial Stout. Imperial Stout is a style of rich, dark and intensely flavoured beer, perfectly for lending dense, slightly savoury, slightly sweet notes to whisky. The dram has an age statement of three years.
Floki’s house style leans towards a slightly earthy malt, and this is enhanced by the stout cask finish. Drinkers can expect notes of gristy barley, honeyed bread, rancio, dark chocolate, vanilla, burnt walnut, heavy brown sugar, espresso, slight hops, yeasty pastry, citrus rind, flowers and dark oak.
Incredibly heavy and complex for its age, this whisky is boosted by the slightly higher proof of 45% ABV.
An enjoyable sipping whisky, this bottling would do really well in Old Fashioned style cocktails.
