Found in Lannemaignan, a small town in the Gers region of south-west France, Domaine le Basque is managed by Michel Lamothe. Lamothe has a strong commitment to producing Armagnac in a traditional way. Perhaps this is why he continues to cultivate the vanishing Folle Blanche grape. Folle Blanche is difficult to grow, and has a very low yield, meaning that distillers and wine makers have often looked to other grapes. Folle Blanche, however, is widely recognised as producing some of the best Armagnac, as it has an intense, oily and spicy flavour ideal for the production of the spirit. Domaine le Basque distils using traditional continuous Armagnac alembics and does not chill filter or use any colouring. This excellent vintage Armagnac is reflective of these traditional methods, a complex offering, replete with dried fruit, soft tannins and coffee notes. On the palate there are hints of tobacco smoke, dark chocolate and crème brûlée. Definitely a spirit worth taking your time with.
