Another cracking bottling from Signatory Vintage’s highly regarded Cask Strength range. This time round they’ve picked out a delightful cask from Deanston distillery.
Deanston, a relatively late addition to the Scotch industry, was founded in the 1960s to provide malt to blenders. Despite being rather modern, the distillery adheres to old fashioned methods, and produces a rather waxy spirit that approaches Clynelish-like character at time.
This whisky was distilled on the 13 of August 2008, and bottled on the 17th of September 2019, having been matured in a first fill sherry butt for fully 11 years.
The result is an extremely rich, luscious Deanston that serves up notes intense cinnamon and chilli spice, prunes, dried cranberries, rich red wine, sherried oak, vanilla, cracked black pepper, honeyed malt, orange peel, slightly drying beeswax and toffee.
Not a whisky for the faint of heart, this dram weighs in at a ripping 67.8% ABV. The spirit is also presented without chill filtration or colouration, ensuring that there is no adulteration of its forceful flavours.
Just 605 bottles were drawn from this cask.
