A historic and much-loved Bourbon bottling returns to its preferred strength of 45% ABV.
Whilst Buffalo Trace Bourbon was first introduced in 1999, the distillery dates back to 1792. It is said to be the oldest continually operating distillery in America, and was given a special dispensation to run during prohibition for “medicinal reasons”.
The whiskey is produced using Kentucky and Indiana corn, specially selected rye and high quality malted barley. The Bourbon is aged onsite in Buffalo Trace’s warehouses, some of which are over a hundred years old.
Buffalo Trace takes warehouse maturation very seriously, pumping steam around the distillery during the winter to guard against Kentucky’s dramatic cold snaps, whilst giving the spirit extra in-and-out cycles with the oak barrels.
Buffalo Trace is aged in the fourth to sixth floors of Warehouses I and K, and the fourth and fifth floors of Warehouse C, which have been identified as producing the best spirit, due to their ambient temperature. The warehouses themselves are constructed of wood and brick and in a manner that allows the air and heat to circulate.
This whiskey opens with notes of sweet dried fruits: figs, prunes, sultanas and currants, accompanied by a bright hit of spicy rye, with flavours of turmeric, anise, cinnamon and grassy herbs. Oaky flavours take hold, with vanilla, clove, apple, sweet custard and charred oak, alongside buttered corn, tropical fruits of mango and pineapple, honey and chewy malty bread.
A bold, well balanced and delicious Bourbon that has become an industry standard. Brilliant drunk neat, over ice, or in cocktails. Brilliant value in this one litre bottling.
Beautiful whiskey, this stuff introduced me to the delights of Kentucky whiskey and I've been a huge fan ever since.
