The fifth batch of this series, designed by Balvenie to be a follow up to the popular Tun 1401 range.
This a mixture of whiskies from different casks, drawn at different ages. Batch 5 contains spirit from 10 Bourbon, 8 sherry hogsheads, 3 refill American oak casks and 8 sherry butts. In total, 29 barrels were drained. The casks feature on a kind of logbook style entry on the bottle’s tube. The spirit from these casks have been allowed to marry together in the titular Tun, until the flavours have fully integrated.
The result is a well balanced and complex whisky, with notes of bright orange rind, raspberries, strawberry, apples, vanilla, chocolate, slight leather, cinnamon, earthy malt, nectarine, chopped herbs, maple syrup, and old, sherried oak.
Tun 1509 Batch 5 has been bottled at 52.6% ABV and without chill filtration or colouration.
A magnificent dram, that lives up to the reputation of the other releases in this series.
