Another batch in Speyside distillery Aberlour’s long standing and highly regarded A’Bunadh series!
A’bunadh roughly translates from Scots Gaelic to “the origin”. The story goes that when Aberlour came to add two further stills to the initial double, they discovered a bottle inside a time capsule with a newspaper from 1898 wrapped around it telling of a fire at the distillery. Whilst the workmen enjoyed most of the bottle, the remainder was sent to Keith for testing, and A’bunadh is a recreation of that 19th century bottling.
Whilst there are inevitable variations between each of the small batches, there remain some constants in the range. A’bunadh is famously robust, as it is bottled at cask strength. This particular batch weighs in at a powerful 60.7% ABV. It is non age stated, non chill filtered and drawn exclusively from Oloroso sherry casks.
Drinkers should expect a warming, chocolaty dram, with plenty of dried fruits, baking spices (nutmeg, cinnamon and star anise), vanilla, coffee, raisins and nuts. This whisky is a little hot, due to its high proof, but this just allows the flavours to ring true.
Another cracking addition to this superb range, which always offers excellent value for money.
