One of Ireland’s great writers, George Bernard Shaw, once proclaimed that “whiskey is liquid sunshine”. This description certain fits this wonderful dram, a triple distilled single malt whiskey from Ireland, produced by the Walsh Whiskey company. This whiskey has been distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The offering is matured in only the finest Spanish sherry butts which have previously held Oloroso fortified wine. The name Red Head reflects the deep ruby red colour of this exquisite dram. On the nose, the drinker is greeted with warm sherried fruit flavours of apricot, plums, dates and sultanas. A little dried citrus peel emerges after a while, accompanied by a sweet vanilla oak note. The palate is very faithful to nose, bringing a chewy mouthfeel with some intense roasted nut flavours and a little woodspice. The finish of this whiskey is long and complex, with a fresh orange juice note lasting, becoming drying with time. This whiskey is presented with all the good such left in, bottled at 46% ABV and without chill-filtration. Only 12,000 bottles per batch are available, so drinkers should move fast if they want to try this dram.
