A very interesting gin from South Africa’s first private distillery. Fynbos is a South African term which refers to a strip of scrubland within in the unique Cape floral environment.
This gin is made with natural botanicals from these Fynbos, including honeybush, wild dagga, buchu, sceletium and the superbly-named Devil’s Claw. The total number of botanicals used is 27, creating a complex and flavoursome gin.
The botanicals are placed inside a kind of giant teabag, and macerated in the neutral spirit, before this spirit is redistilled with the bag hung inside the still for further vapour infusion.
The gin is rich and herbaceous with a thick liqourice note, touches of menthol and lots of fresh citrus and spice flavours.
These notes are given a boost by the 45% ABV strength.
A terrific gin, and as the label says, this is the spirit of the cape.
