Whilst a Thai rum might seem surprising, South East Asia is covered in sugar cane, so it’s actually somewhat surprising we don’t encounter more spirit from this part of the world.

SangSom translates as “moonlight” in Thai and, according to the distillery’s website, the name “vividly captures a pleasurable drinking experience under the gentle glow of the moon.”

Launched in 1977, SangSom gained first gained popularity in the West in the 1980s, before disappearing somewhat. It’s back now, and is determined to make up for lost time! It remained popular in its home country, where it sells more than 70 million litres a year, and enjoys a market share of over 70%.

Made with a base of Thai molasses, the spirit is aged in charred oak bottles for five years.

SangSom offers a light molasses flavour, accompanied by notes of deep charred oak, slight wood spice, vanilla, tropical fruits, brown sugar, melon and citric sugar cane.

A great mixing rum with a rare provenance.
