Raymond Ragnaud are one of our favourite producers from the Cognac region here at Fine Drams. There are a few reasons for this: they continue to be family owned since 1860, they make Cognac only using grapes grown in probably the best cru – Grande Champagne, but mostly we just love the consistent top quality product they create. This is another fine example. Vieielle simply means “old” in this context, so this is an “old reserve of Raymond Ragnaud’s Cognac. Fittingly, it has been aged for an average of 15 years in oak casks, developing a superb complexity. On the nose of this Cognac, drinkers should expect aromas of white peach, light honey, gentle smoke, sweet white grapes, vanilla oak and honeysuckle. The palate remains very faithful to the nose, but adds more rich oaky flavours, and a greater intensity of succulent fruits. The finish is medium in length, with woodspice, sweet grapes and star anise. Another fantastic Cognac from Raymond Ragnaud, and very reasonably priced.
