Port Ellen 35 Year Old 1982- Signatory 30th Anniversary
70 cl, 55.1%

Founded in 1825, the Port Ellen distillery belonged to the Ramsay family until 1920. After closing in 1930, it was brought back to life in 1967, increasing the number of stills from two to four. In 1983, the distillery was completely dismantled. Its single malt enjoys cult status throughout the world and the recent announcement of its imminent reopening in 2020 caused an understandable stir in the whisky world. Distilled on 2nd September 1982, this independent bottling is a true masterpiece. The palette of flavours and aromas is elegant and delicate, yet rich and complex.

Colour: deep golden yellow.

Profile: the rich and immensely beautiful initial nose is intensely smoky, animal, tarry and herbaceous. Allowed to breathe, it becomes increasingly complex. The radiant attack is peaty, fruity (pear, lemon, bramble) and camphoric. Gradually it reveals a luscious side (sage). The long finish is vanilla, saline and peaty. The particularly malty retronasal olfaction highlights an incredibly delicate mouthfeel.

The whisky was disgorged and bottled under my supervision in the Town of Pitlochry on 31st July 2018.
