Pittyvaich 29 Year Old 1989 (2019 Special Release)
70 cl, 51.4%

A rare single malt bottling of Pittyvaich spirit, forming part of Diageo’s highly anticipated 2019 Special Releases outturn.

Pittyvaich was first constructed during the boom for blended whiskies in the mid 1970s, to provide the Bell’s blends with malt. A little high toned, the spirit also expresses the classic nutty-spicy character of former Bell’s distilleries. Unfortunately, the distillery closed in the 1990s, with the global downturn of the whisky business. In 2002, Diageo demolished Pittyvaich.

As a closed distillery, stocks of Pittyvaich are increasingly rare. This cracker of a dram was aged for no less than 29 years in a mixture of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a ludicrously fully flavoured and complex whisky.

The bottling opens with notes of bright, slightly green malt, accompanied by some estery bananas, ginger and baked apples. These flavours are soon followed by notes of sultanas, toffee, tea cake, slight flowers, toasted nuts, toffee, figs in syrup, fresh pastry, dark oak, sherry and some cinnamon.

Presented at a generous cask strength of 51.4% ABV, this is one of the stand-out bottlings from the 2019 Special releases.

A limited release of 4,976 bottles.
