A magnificent rum from the Oliver y Oliver importers. Rather than distilling themselves, the company has sent out its rum masters to scour the Caribbean for the finest spirits available. They regularly import rum fromm Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, alongside other islands in the French and English Caribbean. These are then blended to perfection and aged in the classic solera Jerezana system.
Ocassionally the company releases single-region rums, such as with the Opthimus 25, which is sourced from the Dominican Republic. Opthimus 25 is aged in American and French oak, in the solera system for 25 years. This is a rich and intense rum with a wonderful deep colour and sparky, bright floral notes. On the nose, molasses, cocoa, coffee and roasted nut aromas leap out. A little brown sugar and honey come with time. The palate is dense, with chewy dried fruit, sugar, rich vanilla custard and treacle. The finish is long with lingering vanilla and oaky flavours. This incredible rum picked up a Double Gold in the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. This miniature bottling allows the drinker to taste this excellent spirit without committing to a full bottle and at a fraction of the price.
