Mount Gay XO (or XO, as it is styled) is a truly delicious blend of Barbados rum. Relying on the same excellent quality water, cane and expertise as the well-known and much-loved Eclipse, this rum adds a little more maturity to the mix. Each of the constituent rums in this bottling are aged for between 8 to 15 years old. This rum emphasises older casks of double pot still spirit, resulting a richer, thick and heavily flavoured rum, which is a stark contrast to the floral and fresh Eclipse. Time in the cask has given Mount Gay XO a little more balance, and a marvellously well-rounded character. The nose serves up typical Bajan rum notes of apple pie, vanilla and baking spices, whilst the palate is thick, oaky with a wisp of wood smoke. The finish lingers, with a wonderful balance between the fruity spirit and the oaky cask. Bottled at the slightly higher proof of 43% ABV, this allows the flavours to really ring through. In recent years, the rum has picked up back to back Gold medals from the Rum Masters (from the Spirits Business Magazine), winning in 2014 and 2015 in the Super-Premium category. A delicious rum with an excellent pedigree.
