A big bottle of Mount Gay’s delicious Black Barrel release.
First launched in 2013 to celebrate the 310th anniversary of the distillery (making it the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world) Black Barrel is more intense and sophisticated version of the Bajan rum.
This rum contains a higher proportion of characterful double pot still distillate than the standard Eclipse bottling. Like that bottling, the column and pot still spirits are separately matured in former Bourbon barrels, before they are blended together. Yet for Black Barrel, the spirit is then finished in special, deeply charred Bourbon Barrels, imparting a powerful richness to the rum.
Black Barrel serves up flavours of sultanas, burnt oak, creamy vanilla, bananas, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice, liquorice, red apple, toast and honey, brown sugar and menthol.
Bottled at 43% ABV for a little extra warmth, this is a cut above Mount Gay’s Eclipse bottling.
