A fascinating release from Swedish distillers Mackmyra. This bottling has been made in partnership with Swedish tech company Fourkind, and American software giant Microsoft.

Mackmyra have applied 21st century techniques to whisky’s millennia old traditions. Using a machine learning model, which is powered by Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, Mackmyra have generated 70 million recipes of spirit style and cask variety that are likely to be popular. The AI is also able to swiftly identify which barrels in the distillery’s warehouses are of the highest quality.

Nevertheless, Mackmyra do not want to denigrate the crucial role that the Master Blender serves, and states that whilst recipes and suggestions are created by AI, the final decisions are always made by a person. With this bottling, Mackmyra sampled the top 30 recipes, and after evaluations, picked out this whisky.

The dram itself serves up notes of bright fresh oak, nutty Oloroso, vanilla, toffee, orchard fruits, ginger, aniseed, oak, chopped herbs, tobacco and faint subtle smoke.

The spirit is bottled at 46.1% ABV and without chill filtration or colouration.
