A whisky which is likely to split the populace 52% to 48%!
Gölles claim that this whisky marks a “separation from traditional British single malt” – though it is hard to see many proud Scots accepting that description!
The spirit itself is rather interesting, hailing from the Styria region of Austria, and featuring a mashbill of corn, rye, barley, wheat and spelt. The spirit is also distilled in a traditional pot still.
The whisky has been aged in a mixture of first and second fill barrels, of different wood varieties: French oak, American oak, Caucasian oak and former Sherry cask. This bottling is a blend of whiskies from between 4 to 13 years in age.
The result is a spicy, grain-forward dram, with plenty of corn-heavy, Bourbon-y flavours, and a profile which sometimes approaches Rhum Agricole or Eau-de-Viex. After a while, sharp citrus and bright oak develops.
Bottled at 43.3% ABV, this gives the flavours a touch more warmth.
Golly Gölles! This certainly is an interesting dram, that fans of European whisky will be keen to try.
