An interesting bottling of Lowland distillery Glenkinchie, forming part of Diageo’s Distillers Edition series.
This 2003 vintage has been finished in Amontillado sherry casks for the last part of its 12 year maturation process. Amontillado is a dry style of sherry, between an Oloroso and a Fino in nature. Austere sherry casks such as Amontillado and Fino are rather unusual in the whisky world, yet they can lend a wonderful, slightly savoury note to a dram.
The bottling opens with notes of flowers, custard and oak, followed by some crunchy malt, slight leather, white wine tannins, grapes, orange rind, cereal sweetness, butterscotch, cinnamon and vanilla.
Bottled at 43% ABV, this ensures the whisky has a little more warmth and depth.
