Another fantastic craft mezcal from Mexico. Enmascarado translates as “the Masked Hero”, and refers to the image of a wrestler, in traditional garb, found on the label of this mezcal. Enmascarado uses only organic agave plants. These are allowed to grow to full maturity, before being baked in a large subterranean oven – giving the mezcal its faintly smoky flavour. The baked agave is then juiced, and the juice is distilled twice in small copper pot-stills by Don Guillermo Abad Hernandez, the distillery’s masterful artisan. Unlike the poor quality “mixto” tequilas and mezcals, this is a 100% agave spirit, presenting the pure flavour of the plant. This is a wonderful spirit, that makes a wonderful alternative margarita, adding an earthy, smoky layer of complexity to all cocktails. Bottled at 45% ABV, the flavours benefit from this extra kick.
