A superb, well aged Burnside from Càrn Mòr.
Burnside is the name given to blended malts which are effectively bottlings of Balvenie, that have been “teaspooned” with a very small amount of spirit from their sister distillery Glenfiddich. This is to skirt around William Grant’s stipulations on not independently bottling their single malts under their original names.
This bottling has been aged for just under 3 decades in a single Bourbon cask, developing outstanding complexity and depth.
Drinkers should expect notes of rich, honeyed apples, creamy vanilla custard, dense Bourbon oak with highlights of cinnamon, buttered corn and rye spice, a touch of tobacco smoke, almond, hazelnut, dried apricots, pears and dense, toffee’d malt.
Bottled at 46.4% ABV, this is a supple and satisfying whisky, free from chill filtration or colouration.
Definitely one that the Balvenie fans will want to try, an terrific achievement from the folks at Càrn Mòr.
