Part of Diageo’s Special Releases 2014, this 21 year old Single Malt from the Benrinnes distillery was distilled in 1992 and is fully matured in ex-bodega European oak casks. This is a very heavily sherried monster true to the classic Benrinnes profile. With an outturn of only 2,892 bottles, and the recent surge in popularity among many whisky geeks, we reckon it’s not going to stay on the shelves for too long.
Nose: Crisp wood smoke and spices, followed by a wave of raspberries and cherries. Old oak panelling, leather satchel, warm barley. Red wine, with slight herbs- vermouth like. A lot of dates and figs, with coco pops! Honey roast peanuts and almonds.
Palate: Dark, dark almost burnt fruits. Figs wrapped in leather. Allspice, cinnamon, very dark chocolate. Cherry jam and roasted marshmallows. Old burning oak, and bittersweet strawberries. Faintest hint of lime juice. Another wave of spice- this time nutmeg and vanilla- finishes the palate.
Finish: Very, very, very long and lingering, with cherry and strawberries whipped through cream with stem ginger. Little tobacco smoke too.
Overall: Simply amazing whisky. Some of the very best sherried whisky money can buy, astonishing variety of flavours and depth of richness. This is near enough a perfect sherry cask dram, with fruits, spice, herbs and smoke.
