A delightful Gordon & MacPhail bottling of Benrinnes single malt, forming part of their renowned Connoisseurs Choice range.
This distillery was known for using a partial triple distillation, which produced a thick, meaty spirit. This process was discontinued in 2007. Cold worm-tubs are used, adding further heft to the spirit. It particularly shines in sherry casks, such as this one.
Matured for 17 years in a single refill sherry hogshead, having been distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2018.
The result is a thick, luscious whisky, with a rich, sherried character and notes of caramelized apples with sugar, cinnamon and cloves, alongside a little vanilla custard, milk chocolate, almond, orange rind, dried apricots and prunes, with a touch of marshmallow.
Bottled at 54% ABV, and without chill filtration or colouration, this is a whisky with a creamy mouthfeel and intense flavour profile. Just 246 bottles were produced.
A Speysider unlike most others, though the character of Benrinnes bottled after 2007 is likely to be very different, with bottlings such as this becoming increasingly rare.
