Aureum 5 Year Old
70 cl, 43%

A surprising and fascinating whisky, produced in Germany! Whilst Germany is not the first place one associates with single malt whisky, the industry in the nation is well established, with 23 distilleries producing whisky of some variety.

Aureum is produced by the Ziegler distillery, which has been going since 1865, but mostly focusses on Schnapps and Eau-de-Vie. The distillery is found in Franconia, a central region of Germany that has cold winters and hot summers, perfect for the swift maturation of spirits. They use pot stills to produce their spirit, and age in casks in a cellar.

This whisky has been aged for 5 years in a mixture of oak and chestnut casks, before a finishing period in old sherry and Bourbon barrels. This should pique the interest of all Scotch whisky fans, as the regulations in Scotland do not allow for any spirit to be aged in anything other than oak. This is an excellent opportunity to taste something that has been aged in a different sort of wood.

The result of this interesting maturation is a fruity, woody and vanilla rich dram, with plenty of gingery, zinging spice, slight sherry flavours and grassy cereals. The spirit is bottled at 43% ABV, giving these flavours a bit of a boost.

A wonderful German whisky that rewards adventurous drinkers with tonnes of intriguing flavours.
