A terrific independent bottling of the cult, closed Trinidadian distillery Caroni, from Dutch company Ultimatum.
Made with molasses and distilled in both column and pot stills, this is an excellent example of the heavy style that made Caroni so famous, and was previously a central part of the Royal Navy’s rum.
1998 was one of the last distilling years of Caroni. This rum has been aged in a single former Bourbon barrel (no. 41) for 20 years, having been distilled in January 1998, and bottled in November 2018.
The rum itself displays all the classic pungency and intensity associated with this distillery, possesses flavours of custard, dark chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, bananas, orange rind, honey, vanilla, dried fruits, charcoal, toasted nuts, dried mango and slight leather.
Bottled at 64.1% ABV, this brings to the rum an incredible peppery spice, alongside a filling mouthfeel and full body. The rum is also natural in colour and non chill filtered.
Just 259 bottles were produced.
