Mekhong Thai Spirit
70 cl, 35%

Previously marketed as a whisky, this unique Thai spirit is actually made with a base of 95% molasses and 5% rice, making it something closer to a rum than a whisky.

Mekhong is named after Mekhong River, found on the eastern border of Thailand. The spirit was first produced in 1941, and was the first “golden spirit” to be made in the country. The spirit is produced at the Bangyikhan Distillery, found on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Made with a long fermentation of between 6 to 8 weeks, the spirit is double distilled, and flavoured with local honey, herbs, spices and caramel.

Mekhong offers up flavours of nutty sweetness, toffee, mint, ginger, citrus rind, honey and bright white rice. A slightly bitter and herbaceous finish.

Widely regarded as the national spirit of Thailand, Mekhong is often used in a cocktail called Thai Sabai (Sabai translates as “Cosy”) which mixes the spirit with basil leaves, lime juice and soda water.

A great option for warm weather drinking, try this with plenty of ice.
