Not a particularly well-known distillery, Glenburgie produces some single malt whiskies of real quality, and is known for the slightly meaty quality of its spirit. The Ultimate Whisky Company have an excellent history of choosing superb single cask whiskies, and this is no exception: a terrific, 21 year old from the distillery that makes up the backbone of the Ballatine’s blend. This whisky was distilled on the 15th of June 1995, and bottled on the 9th of June 2017, making it less than a week younger than 22. Having been aged in a single hogshead for such a long period, the whisky has developed a tremendous depth of complexity, with decadent dark fruit notes and touches of sweet wine and polished oak. Some classical “burgie oiliness is apparent too. This whisky is presented without any chill filtration or artificial colouring, and bottled at a warming 46% ABV, allowing for the natural flavours and mouthfeel of the spirit to take hold. Just 249 bottles of this dram are available worldwide, making it a real rarity.
